Over the course of six years, World War II spread around the earth.  In all, more than 50 countries were directly involved in the war.  45 million people were killed and 12 million Europeans were left homeless.  Between 1939 and 1945 the Allies dropped 3.4 million tons of bombs and 12,000 heavy bombers were shot down.

The Second World War affected everyone in Britain, the Empire and Commonwealth.  Many children were evacuated and women had to work in factories and on the land while their husbands fought in battle.

What did people do during an air raid?  Why had food to be rationed?  What clothes did people wear?  How did people cope?
