Queen Victoria ruled Britain between 1837 and 1901.  The Victorian period was a time of great progress which changed many people's lives in different ways.  There were lots of new inventions and a huge growth in the system of canals, railways and roads.

Before the 19th century many children worked long hours -  helping with the family trade, or with domestic chores.  At the beginning of Queen Victoria's reign they still worked in unpleasant and dangerous places such as mills, factories, and coal mines.  However, new laws were passed limiting the hours children could work.   Compulsory education was also introduced!
